Description
The Foley Johnson Premiere Napa Valley lot features an estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rutherford appellation. This Cabernet is grown on two different vineyards on the Foley Johnson estate - the Peral Vineyard and the Main Vineyard, which has loamy soils of gravel, clay and sand. This helps proved ample drainage and lessens the vigor of foliage growth. These ideal vineyard conditions allow our Cabernet to reach full maturity on the vine. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for about 20 months in French oak. The nose is swarming with notes of blackberries, baking spices and toasted oak.

Patrick Foley
Winemaker, Foley Johnson
Patrick Foley was born in Phoenix, Arizona and shortly after moved to Santa Barbara, CA where he and his three older siblings were raised. Patrick says Santa Barbara was a beautiful place to be raised where he was surrounded by great people. He received his undergraduate degree from Chapman University. Upon graduation Patrick worked in Finance briefly before realizing his true passion in winemaking.
Wine had been prevalent in Patrick's family for many years since his father, Proprietor Bill Foley, started Foley Estates in 1996. He had the privilege of working his first harvest at Chalk Hill Estate in 2011 where he quickly realized the Wine Industry was a much more enjoyable work lifestyle. Patrick then moved to New Zealand in the beginning of 2012 where he obtained his Masters in Viticulture and Enology from Lincoln University. He then worked as an enologist in Mendoza, Argentina for six months underneath the winemaking team at Nieto Senetiner. In 2013, Patrick moved back to California and worked alongside Winemaker Leslie Renaud at Roth Estate Winery in Healdsburg, CA as the Enologist. Patrick was soon promoted to Assistant Winemaker.
When asked about his new position as Winemaker at Foley Johnson, Patrick said, "Foley Johnson is not only a beautiful property with great vineyards, it is also named as a tribute to both my parents' heritage, which makes this winery one that is very close to my heart. I am excited for the opportunity to create wines from these great vineyards and to work with our consulting winemaker, David Ramey."
Because of his love for wine Patrick also enjoys cooking. When asked about his favorite foods to make he said, "I cook mainly grill based foods, but after living in Argentina I enjoy doing Asadas which are cooked strictly from fresh wood coals and takes about 3 hours to cook anything. This style of cooking allows you to enjoy the company of your friends followed with wine and perfectly cooked meats."
When not working, Patrick can be found snowboarding, fishing, hiking, camping and doing anything in the outdoors with his side kick yellow Labrador, Nala. He also loves to travel and had the opportunity to recently attend the World Cup in Brazil.
Country born: United States
Education: Masters in Viticulture & Enology from Lincoln University, NZ
Intern- Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards & Winery
Enologist- Nieto Senetiner
Enologist & Asst. Winemaker- Roth Estate
Years in the wine industry: 6 years
Winemaking Philosophy:
I prefer a natural and hands off approach to winemaking. While there are inherent risks of not inoculating or using various products to enhance the wine I believe the end result speaks for itself. Being hands off requires much more monitoring to ensure everything is developing the way I want it to, but allows the wine to truly express the region and vineyard. I am very involved in the vineyard to ensure the grapes ripen well balanced and can pick when the fruit is deemed ready. Great grapes make great wine without outside influence so that is the most important part for my winemaking style.
