Description
This special lot of 2008 Pillar Rock Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is entirely from old, dry-farmed, head-pruned vines planted in the late 1960s. The clone of Cabernet is not known, but the rootstock is St. George. These vines usually produce only 1.5 tons per acre but the wine is outstanding: rich, deep and elegant, as only Stags Leap District can produce.

Cary Gott is the fourth generation of his family in the premium California vineyard and wine business, he has life long experience in winemaking, viticulture and marketing of ultra-premium wines. Founder, owner and president of Montevina Wines in Amador County from 1971 to 1982. Winemaster and President of Corbett Canyon Vineyards in San Luis Obispo, 1983 to 1986. Senior Vice President, Vineyard & Wine Operations for Seagram Chateau & Estates in California, and President of Sterling Vineyards. Winemaster for Mumm Napa Valley. 1986 to 1997. Currently owns and operates Vineyard & Winery Estates, a consulting company with emphasis on start up wineries.

Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?
A: Pillar Rock wines come from a single vineyard. One small locks stands out because of its age. Planted in 1968 it is dry farmed and has consistently produced outstanding fruit. Premiere Napa Valley presented the opportunity to create a wine from just this small block.
Q: What was your inspiration for this offering?
A: Old vines are becoming quite rare in the valley and it was a chance to see what this block could produce on its own.
