Description

In the cold of the early morning of October 8th, 2013, we set out to harvest our prized Block 3 Cabernet Sauvignon, an area that rests on a small clay plateau at Seavey Vineyard. We began by harvesting only the dry, morning-sun side of the block, giving time for the dew to evaporate from the clusters hanging on the afternoon-sun side of these majestic 21 year-old vines. We brought the hand-picked fruit in quickly, and upon sampling it, winemaker Jim Duane decided to leave the harvesting of the other side of the vines for another day so that he could separately vinify the “morning” and “afternoon” fruit. Thus began a fascinating journey to reveal and come to know the distinctive characteristics yielded by fruit from the two sides of the same vine. While we found a wonderful opulence and pronounced ripeness in the afternoon-sun wine, it was the exuberant freshness and seductive layering of flavors in the morning-sun wine that destined it to be the clear choice for our Premiere Napa Valley auction lot.
