2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
Howell Mountain
This tiny 1.92-acre vineyard sits on top of the Howell Mountain Appellation at roughly 2,100 feet elevation. We have kept the crop size to one cluster per shoot, allowing it to have perfect ripening potential and maximizing the quality of the fruit. The vineyard is planted to the 169 clone, which provides very small berried fruit and leaves us with the most concentrated and flavorful fruit of any of the vineyards we work with. The total crop off this vineyard in 2009 was 2.47 tons making it an average of 1.28 tons to the acre! This wine has never been bottled on its own. We currently have 80% new French oak on the wine, utilizing four different barrel makers to increase the complexity.

Winemaker, Moffett Vineyards
In 1991 I joined the family business at Livingston Vineyards. There, with my father John Livingston, I developed anappreciation for winemaking from our first winemaker, Randy Dunn. My roles ranged from California sales to cellar master. Within a few years, I assumed all cellar operations, collaborating with esteemed winemaker Greg Graham from Rombauer (1992-1996), John Kongsgaard (1996-2001), and Marco DiGiulio (2001-2006). I also worked a harvest in New Zealand's South Island with Grant Taylor, one of New Zealand's most honored winemakers. Currently I have Jennifer Rue on my team and I enjoy working and learning from her.
Country born: United States
Education: My wine education has all been hands on, working with Randy Dunn, Greg Graham, John Kongsgaard, Grant Taylor (in New Zealand) and Marco DiGiulio. Current I have Jennifer Rue as my winemaking partner who worked at Miner Family for nine years prior to becoming a consultant.
Years in the wine industry: 20-30 years
Honors / Awards:
Voted by my kids as the Best Dad!
Winemaking Philosophy:
Work the vineyards and make the best wine I can from the fruit we get. Fortunately I have some amazing little vineyards.
Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?
A: With only 3 tons off this vineyard, we made the wine in open top single ton fermenters and were able to be very gentle with the fruit with hand punch-downs. This wine is a great expression of Howell Mountain.
