Winemaker, Viader Vineyards & Winery
I came to the United States as a post-graduate college student. Even before establishing VIADER, I was decidedly more attracted to Old World wines, and particularly impressed by the wines of St. Emilion which incorporate a lot of Cabernet Franc.
This was my inspiration for creating a blend with a high percentage of Cabernet Franc (the VIADER blend usually comprises of nearly 40% Cabernet Franc, and 60% Cabernet Sauvignon).
Always "daring to be different," I decided to bring the Bordeaux style of winemaking and vineyard cultivation to the California hillside by planting the vines in rows going up and down the mountain, following the path of the afternoon sun down the steep slopes of Howell Mountain. Soon after successfully releasing my first vintage, it was clear that with optimal sun exposure, and unique soil that allows for natural drainage, the vines in the rocky terroir produce fruit of exceptional quality.
In 2002, my son Alan came on board first to manage the vineyards and later became our Director of Operations, joining me on the winemaking and production team.

Q&A With the Winemaker
Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?
A: Components for the blend were hand-selected from small lots, choosing among favorite wines from French Oak barrels.
Q: What was your inspiration for this offering?
A: 2008 vintage represented our twentieth harvest, and so we wanted to make an ultra-premium blend from our best lots that showed bright ripe fruit, but elegance for our winemaker's European palate.
Q: Fill in the blanks: I chose to make this wine from this particular ______________ because ______________.
A: I chose to make this wine from this particular Block A because of its richness and intensity, and it was complemented by some cabernet franc from Blocks B, C & D.
Q: Why should a wine lover have a bottle of this wine in their cellar?
A: It is a unique work of art, and very limited in production.
Q: Any quote, poem, lyric you feel represents this wine?
A: "Great wines are characterized by the intensity and delicacy of their bouquets. What one calls 'finesse' allied to a complexity and individuality which go to make up their distinctive personalities."
