Description
Tonella ranch’s history is short, yet well entrenched in Napa Valley winemaking history. The first owners on record were the Rutherford brothers, who owned much of what is now Rutherford. Having no children, they gave the land to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. In 1920, the land was bought by J.J. Ponti, the director of winemaking at Beaulieu Vineyard who hired Andre Tchelistcheff, and was then passed to his son, Louis Tonella, and remains in the Tonella family to this day. Sequoia Grove is lucky to have long-term rights to the land and these are the first grapes off the new vineyard planted by Steve Allen. Those in history knew good dirt: the Cabernet Franc off of this vineyard is dark and rich with flavors of sweet blackberry and hints of spice.
Aging Process
Aged in the first underground cellar in the valley in French oak barrels for 20 months

A graduate of the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program, Molly traveled the globe, working and studying in Chile and New Zealand, as well as her native California, before settling in at Sequoia Grove to work with well-respected winemaker Michael Trujillo. Working closely with viticulturist Jake Terrell on the Rutherford estate vineyards in addition to amazing growers on the Rutherford Bench, Pritchard Hill, Howell Mountain and the foothills of St. Helena, Yountville, and Oak Knoll deepen her understanding of winemaking.
