Description
Situated on the valley floor between St. Helena and Calistoga, our historic 110-acre estate is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Napa Valley.
Winemaker Avery Heelan is aging this special lot comprised entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon in 100% new French oak barrels for 18 months, allowing the intensity of this stellar vintage to come into balance with the nuance and complexity of the fruit that is a signature of our remarkable site. Violets, dark chocolate and confectionary spices are balanced by silky, weighted tannins that portend to a powerful finish after several decades’ time aging in bottle.

Avery Heelan
Winemaker, Larkmead Vineyards
Avery Heelan was born and raised in New England and wine was always a natural part of every dinner and celebration growing up, although she didn’t quite know where it would one day lead. She graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s in chemistry and her path was headed towards the pharmaceutical industry. Despite trying both the DNA drug discovery side as well as the marketing side of big pharma, she knew there was a grander path where she could combine her love for science, creating things, and the outdoors. In 2013, she enrolled in University of California, Davis to complete her Masters in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry, with a specialization in Viticulture and Enology.
While at Davis, her love and fascination for wine was solidified and she completed her master’s thesis studying the aromatic thiols in Sauvignon Blanc. In pursuit of continued learning and gaining some practical knowledge, she began working harvests around the world. First at CADE Estate Winery in St Helena, then abroad to Western Australia at Capel Vale Winery as vintage enologist. Her love for white burgundy landed her as the vintage assistant winemaker at Domaine Yves Boyer Martenot in Meursault, France and although she wanted to continue traveling, she got a job offer she could not refuse to join the Screaming Eagle team as cellar master in Oakville, CA.
After a few years apprenticing under Screaming Eagle winemaker, Nick Gislason, she had her sights set on the historic estate, Larkmead Vineyards. She joined Larkmead Vineyards in 2019 as associate winemaker, working alongside esteemed former winemaker, Dan Petroski. In 2021, Avery was promoted to head winemaker of Larkmead overseeing all winemaking and vineyard activities and continued climate action and research initiatives. Through her tenure at Larkmead, she is always in pursuit of balance and a strong advocate for making wines with incredible distinction and identity of place.
