Description
In the late 1800s, Ethel Lewelling Taplin had a favorite spot in her family farm. That place is precisely the block from which this wine comes. A thoughtful, diligent woman, she lived the history of Napa Valley - grapes, to walnuts, through turkeys and back to grapes in her lifetime. Year after year, in this block that now bears her name, we see perfect berries that concentrate flavor. We strive to represent a sense of place in our wines, and place is invariably a result of time. When we say we pour history in every glass … we mean it.

Julien Fayard
Winemaker, Taplin Cellars
With more than two decades of winemaking expertise, Julien Fayard believes in producing wines with an identity, exploiting what makes each one unique. Originally from France, Julien began his career as a winemaker producing wine at his family’s winery in Provence. In Bordeaux he worked at Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite before relocating to Napa Valley. Julien earned his Master in Agri-Business from ESA France and his Master in Winemaking from Toulouse France. In 2011, he received his MBA from UC Davis.

Education: I have a master's degree in agribusiness from the Agriculture University at Angers, a Master in Enology from Toulouse and an MBA from UC Davis in Entrepreneurship and Business.

Winemaking Philosophy:
I am a terroir-centric winemaker looking for the essence and signature of a place. I prefer easing a wine forward over aggressive intervention. The magic for me is getting to know each vintage through the year, the harvest, and the fermentations so that I can consistently let the wine express that year and that place.
