Description
When Donald Hess first walked the hillsides of Mount Veeder three decades ago, it reminded him of the great growing regions in Europe, where his family’s business traced back to the 17th century. Since then, Hess winemakers have come to know Mount Veeder intimately, how its steep slopes and volcanic soils command respect from the vines.
Our vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, but Malbec also thrives here. So for Premiere, we offer Malbec from our favorite barrel from 2011. The wine has aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, dark fruit and supple tannins lead to a long finish. This Malbec is a testimony to the vision of Donald Hess. Mountain fruit. Mountain dreams, realized.

Winemaker, Hess Collection Winery
I was named assistant winemaker at Cambria in 1990, then winemaker in 1992, producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir plus some Syrah. In 1999, Donald Hess was looking for someone to oversee all winemaking for The Hess Collection, and as a student I loved Cabernet, especially from the Napa Valley and it inspired me to pursue winemaking. Now, I'm literally on top of Napa, making mountain Cabernets. Mountain fruit is different from valley floor fruit - and so are the wines. They are structured, complex, rich wines, with distinctive tannins, ageability and concentrated fruit.

I have a strong belief in making wine in the vineyard, working each site to absolutely maximize flavors. My goal is to make ripe-fruit-forward California style wines with both power and elegance.
