Aged 22 months in new Darnajou French oak barrels, predominately heavy in toast, this unique wine is Inky and concentrated in structure, indicative of winemaker Mark Herold’s style. After completing my academic career at the University of Davis with a Ph.D. in Ecology with an emphasis in nutritional biochemistry, I started my first foray into the wine world at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as their Research Enologist.
Merus was my first personal project. It was a labor of love that I made in my garage in downtown Napa. That first vintage was extremely challenging weather-wise, and on top of that I had limited access to equipment. Despite all of the challenges, the 1998 Merus received 93 points from Robert Parker. Soon after releasing Merus, I started my consulting business with a client list that has included Hestan, Kamen, Harris, Buccella, Kobalt, Celani Family Vineyards, Maze and The Vineyardist.

My philosophy it to utilize what I learned through my research at Phelps. I try to bridge the scientific method with winemaking to determine the best approach for making wines of quality and balance.
