Seleccion Herrera
2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley
There’s a reason why you often hear that great wines are “made in the vineyard.” Because it’s true! It’s always been a dream of mine to one day control 100% of the growing and farming for each of the vineyards that we source fruit from. Beginning in 2008, this dream finally came to fruition! As part of the Mi Sueño portfolio, we now have five different Cabernet vineyards to work with. Three are in the Coombsville area of Napa, one is in the heart of the Oak Knoll District and the last one is situated in the shallows of Mount Veeder. When it comes to crafting our Premiere Napa Valley lot each year, diversity of site, soil and microclimates provides me with an enviable amount of options. Those familiar with our Herrera portfolio already know that production of these wines is limited to the best four barrels of each vintage. Not only does our PNV lot carry the Selección Herrera designation, but since it is limited to only five cases, I am able to craft a wine utilizing the best that Mother Nature has to offer. I hope that you enjoy this exclusive. Salud!

Winemaker, Mi Sueño Winery
I started my career in wine making while taking on a cellar worker position my senior year in high school in 1985 at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. Since then, I've been blessed with the opportunity to be Assistant Winemaker at Chateau Potelle, Winemaker at Vine Cliff and Director of Winemaking at Paul Hobbs Consulting. Mi Sueno Winery was founded in 1997 and since then, we've launched Rolando Herrera Consulting and Herrera Vineyard Management.
Country born: Mexico
Education: Although having no formal education, I learned through practice and with the mentoring of winemakers such as Warren Winiarski and Paul Hobbs.
Years in the wine industry: 30+ years
Honors / Awards:
Founding president of the Napa Sonoma Mexican-American Vintner's Association
Having three wines (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon) poured at The White House
Winemaking Philosophy:
Since Mother Nature is so generous, we try to be as hands off as possible with little intervention. We are very blessed here in Napa Valley, so most of the work comes from Mother Nature. Outside of that factor, I like to have full control; hence I started my vineyard management company. Having your own winemaking facility helps you keep a close eye on the quality and also having your bottling line as well. The more I can control, the more comfortable I feel.
Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?
A: Our Herrera portfolio serves as the foundation for our Premiere Lot. With production limited to the best four barrels of each vintage, our Herrera wines represent the best that Mother Nature has to offer.
