Red Wine
Spring Mountain District

Description

Spread across the steep hillsides of Spring Mountain, the Newton Vineyard estate is comprised of 112 vineyard blocks intertwined with the existing forested landscape. Each parcel is planted to the Bordeaux varietal ideally suited for the specific aspect and soil type. Individual microclimates within the mountaintop’s many contours and rugged terrain provide our winemaker diverse components from which to create an interesting, complex wine. Each year Newton makes The Puzzle, an iconic wine blended from these parcels to showcase the finest expression of our Spring Mountain estate. This offering is an outstanding selection that will be included as one component of the 2009 The Puzzle.

Chris Millard

Winemaker, Newton Vineyard

Winemaker, Chris Millard

My first winemaking job was at Bernardus Winery in Carmel Valley, starting in the cellar and became the assistant winemaker. I then worked at Bridlewood and Sterling Vineyard before coming to Newton Vineyard in May 2008.

Country born: United States

Education: I studied Enology at CSU Fresno.

Years in the wine industry: 15-20 years

Honors / Awards:
Consistent 90+ points for Newton Vineyard wines.

Winemaking Philosophy:
I enjoy working with the intense fruit that Newton's Spring Mountain vineyard provides, aiming to interfere as little as possible. This means using the native yeasts and bottling wine unfiltered, which is a more meticulous, laborious approach, but worth it.

Q&A With the Winemaker

Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?

A: We use small tanks which allow our 112 blocks to be kept separate until our winemaker artfully assembles these unique parcels, like pieces of a puzzle, into a multi-faceted blend. By keeping each block separate, we are able to really identify special lots as they mature. This PNV lot showcases our mountain fruit with intense fruit flavor and complexity.
