Description
For over 60 years, our family has grown outstanding Cabernet Franc on our vineyard in Napa Valley’s Oakville district. We selected a barrel from our old vine Cabernet Franc for Premiere Napa Valley 2011 both to showcase our family’s long history in Napa Valley and because of the depth and concentration of our old-vine Cabernet Franc wines. This wine lot shows aromas of dark chocolate, baking spices and violets. Layers of flavor reveal cassis, mineral and cocoa—an incredible expression of Cabernet Franc from our historic vineyard. Our 30-year-old Cabernet Franc vines are among the oldest in Napa Valley. Grafted from our original vines planted on our property in 1949, the origin of this Cabernet Franc clone is unknown and referred to as the Detert clone. Fourth-generation Detert family member, Tom Garrett, is the winemaker.

Tom Garrett
Winemaker, Detert Family Vineyards
In keeping with the family winegrowing tradition, the Detert wines are crafted by Tom Garrett, one of the three great-grandsons behind the Detert label. The Wine Spectator has heralded Tom as a rising star winemaker. He cut his teeth at the likes of Turley, Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, and under Heidi Peterson Barrett as her assistant winemaker for Revana. Tom has been at the helm of the Detert wines since 2000.

Q: Premiere Napa Valley wines are innovative and allow each winery to showcase the region's sense of exploration in fine winemaking. What kind of exploration did your Premiere Napa Valley wine allow you to do?
A: It gave me an opportunity to create a small lot based on our old-vine Cabernet Franc. A very distinctive area of our vineyard that is typically a component of our blend and tells a great story of our historic property.
