Big Bear of a Mountain Cab
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon
Howell Mountain
Each year winemaster Ed Sbragia makes his Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon by combining fruit from a handful of vineyards, and for this wine he started with two of his favorites: Bancroft Ranch, with its classic Cabernet flavors of ripe, sweet black currants, and Tre Colline, with its dense blackberry and red berry flavors with firm tannins. Ed added fruit from a new Howell Mountain vineyard: The "Rancho del Osos Roja."; Named for the red bears that swim in the nearby pond, this vineyard has characteristics similar to Tre Colline. In 2000, its first vintage, the grapes it produced convinced Ed that it will join the ranks of the other Private Reserve vineyards he has to choose from each year.
