Description
After the “great shaking” last August, we entered the winery with trepidation. Many barrels were on the ground, but none were broken. And not a drop was spilled! After careful examination, however, we realized one lone barrel was missing. Because of the frequency with which Peter Paul is asked, “Where’s Mary?” we adopted the phrase to refer to the missing barrel. It was a bright spot in our clean-up regime. But there was a downside too. Not only was this a new French Taransaud barrel, but it was also filled with our best Cabernet—from Leslie Rudd’s sky-high Mount Veeder Vineyard. It was weird. Where was Mary?
A week later, we were still cleaning up when we noticed a pile of scattered boxes and winery supplies in a dark cellar corner. Behind the boxes was Mary! Somehow she had rolled all the way to the far end of the cellar, where fallen supplies had hidden her from view. Thankfully, no wine had spilled. We’ve kept this unique barrel separate from our Mount Veeder blend in order to bottle 5 cases exclusively for Premiere. Peter Paul “Where’s Mary?” emerged from the Quake of 2014 shaken but hardly stirred.

I believe I'm the only commercial winemaker who's also a professional wine (and food) writer. I started out as a cellar rat in New York's Long Island in 1988. In 1992, I began a 7-year stint with Wine Spectator, finishing as West Coast Editor. Moved to Napa in October 1999. Co-founded the only New World winery dedicated to rose (SoloRosa) in 2001; co-founded Covenant Winery (with Napa vintner Leslie Rudd) in 2003. And now make wine for several other wineries, including Peter Paul, under the aegis of M Square Wine Consultants, owned and operated with winemaker Daniel Moore.
Still writing, too. Since 2001, I've written seven cookbooks including: Dean & Deluca, PlumpJack and Domaine Chandon along with continuing journalistic pursuits for such publications as The Wall Street Journal and Wines & Vines. I also teach at the CIA's Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies in my spare time.

Winemaking Philosophy:
As many of my mentors would say: "Less is more." Typically, I ferment with native yeast and bottle unfined/unfiltered. Great grapes make great wines. Great winemakers try not to screw it up!
