Description
Created by the Harlan family to share at their table and with close friends, The Mascot was originally unnamed and unlabeled. The components were sourced from the younger vines of Harlan Estate, BOND and Promontory. Taken by the wine’s spirited charm, Will Harlan convinced his family and the winegrowing team to allow him to share it with an audience of curious and interested individuals.
In certain respects, these younger vines today exemplify the vanguard of the team’s commitment not only to reverential farming but also to an ever-deepening understanding of the land and its climate. Insights gained during the last 20 years of vine-by-vine farming have helped the team to see the vineyards as communities of individuals, each with a life force of its own; and the human beings who care for them, in turn, have fostered a profoundly personal connection with every vine in their charge.
As the team transitioned to dry farming, the training methods also gradually evolved to better respect this “vine energy,” allowing each vine to establish its own resilience and adapt to its available resources. Consequently, rather than removing or hedging shoots during the growing season, the team instead leaves them intact and wraps them. This formation of weaving, and in particular combined with head-training, follows the natural contours of the vine and conducts its energy purposefully toward its most virtuous end, the fruit.

Cory Empting
Winemaker, The Mascot
A native of Napa Valley, California, Cory Empting has known this land all his life. Working his first harvest at age 15 with esteemed winemaker Ric Forman, Cory discovered his passion and decided that winemaking would be his chosen path and profession.
Cory studied viticulture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and spent his summers in Oakville, interning at both Harlan Estate and BOND. These experiences provided him the opportunity to work alongside Bob Levy, who further expanded Cory’s knowledge and deepened his resolve. Driven to further develop his winemaking skills and knowledge, Cory began traveling and worked in cellars in Spain, Argentina and Australia to name a few.
He joined the Harlan family team full-time in 2001. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of Winegrowing at Harlan Estate, BOND and Promontory, he assumed the winemaking role for Will Harlan’s first project with his family, The Mascot. Introduced in 2013, the wine is made from the younger vines of each of the aforementioned properties.
In 2021—his 20th anniversary with the organization—Cory was appointed to the position of Managing Director of Winegrowing for the Harlan family domain. Bob Levy, as always, supports Cory in this capacity while continuing as the Director of Winegrowing at The Napa Valley Reserve and assisting the family with several projects.
