Clos du Val

Cabernet Sauvignon
Stags Leap District

5 cases produced

Highlights

  • Crafted from one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon blocks on our Hirondelle Estate Vineyard
  • The “Renegade District” was replanted in 2005 to adjust the row orientation based on climate change
  • 100% estate Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Aging 18 months in new French oak barrels using Taransaud coopers

Description

This single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted from the “Renegade District” on our Hirondelle Estate in Stags Leap District, which we replanted in 2005. Our winemaker at the time had the foresight to adjust the row orientation and trellis system of the vineyards based on climate change, which was unusual then. This district on the Estate has been consistently producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon ever since. This wine is a tribute to all the renegades who have the courage to challenge the norm.

Carmel Greenberg

Winemaker, Carmel Greenberg

Carmel Greenberg was welcomed into the Clos du Val winemaking team in the summer of 2021. Along with a strong foundational education in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California, Davis, Carmel also brings a breadth of experience in crafting renowned Napa Valley wines, from Cakebread Cellars to Buccella, and most recently, Dominus Estate.

Carmel originally planned to channel her creative passions into the world of design, but while working at a French fine dining restaurant in her native Tel Aviv, Israel, she became transfixed by the world of wine. She soon began diving into the study of wine, and when she won first place at a national wine knowledge competition, she knew she was on the right path.

In 2006, Carmel relocated to California in to pursue her dream of becoming a winemaker. After obtaining her degree from UC Davis, she continued her training in the cellars of Napa Valley wineries and deepened her affinity for terroir-driven, Bordeaux-style red wines.

Now embarking upon her next journey as Winemaker of Clos du Val, Carmel has quickly employed her experience working with Bordeaux varieties and exceptional vineyards to not only continue but actively shape Clos du Val’s 50-year legacy of elegant, supple, complex, and inspiring wines.
