Description
A very rocky section of the land Ethel Lewelling Taplin inherited has always been treasured by the family and it became a surprise as a vineyard. Under gravely soil lies an ancient riverbed where the rocks go deeper than in the rest of the Estate. In 2019, a warm summer characterized by morning fog and evenly warm afternoons allow the fruit to ripen in uniform clusters. Perfect Opportunity! This wine comes from selected rows at the center of this vineyard, where is rockier. It is aged for 2 years in a mild toasted barrel of new French Oak, that gives a smooth finish to a lush full wine.

Julien Fayard
Winemaker, Taplin Cellars
With more than two decades of winemaking expertise, Julien Fayard believes in producing wines with an identity, exploiting what makes each one unique. Originally from France, Julien began his career as a winemaker producing wine at his family’s winery in Provence. In Bordeaux he worked at Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite before relocating to Napa Valley. Julien earned his Master in Agri-Business from ESA France and his Master in Winemaking from Toulouse France. In 2011, he received his MBA from UC Davis.

Education: I have a master's degree in agribusiness from the Agriculture University at Angers, a Master in Enology from Toulouse and an MBA from UC Davis in Entrepreneurship and Business.

Winemaking Philosophy:
I am a terroir-centric winemaker looking for the essence and signature of a place. I prefer easing a wine forward over aggressive intervention. The magic for me is getting to know each vintage through the year, the harvest, and the fermentations so that I can consistently let the wine express that year and that place.
