Description
A single vineyard wine should have its own story to tell, a unique personality and an innate balance and completeness. The Dead Fred Vineyard fits this bill. It is situated in the Coombsville nested appellation on a rocky volcanic knoll, with soil of gray volcanic ash and rhyolite (compressed ash) rocks. Its southwestern exposure causes it to pick up heat during the day and the proximity to the mouth of the Napa Valley keeps the nights cool. This combination of volcanic soil, daytime heat and nighttime cool creates fruit that is uncommonly structured and ripe, yet fresh and minerally. This wine always has signature black fruits and graphite, very full, yet light and mineral - “weight without heaviness." This special wine will develop for many years. Organically farmed estate vineyard and fermented with native yeasts.

Steve Matthiasson
Winemaker, Matthiasson
Years of working with different wineries on the vineyard side of the business has helped me understand the relationship between viticulture and wine. After a decade of exploring making wine from different grape varieties, vineyard sites, and farming techniques I started making our Matthiasson wines in 2003. I strive to make wines that are ripe and powerful yet food friendly and moderate in alcohol. We grow traditional Napa varieties like Cabernet and Chardonnay as well as less common varieties such as Ribolla Gialla and Cabernet Franc.
