Description

Nathan Coombs Estate, named in honor of the founder of Coombsville, is the newest vineyard in the Paul Hobbs portfolio of distinct properties located in premium wine growing regions. Located in the southeastern corner of the Napa Valley, and tucked up against the foothills of the Vacas Range, Coombsville is poised to be the next great Napa Valley sub-appellation. The region is known for its cool climate, which allows for an extended growing season, resulting in muscular and structured wines with an intense black fruit and mineral profile. 2013 is shaping up to be one of our favorite vintages in the past two decades, and we are excited to feature our top lot of cabernet sauvignon for the first ever Paul Hobbs Winery - Premiere Napa Valley auction lot. Dense black in color, the wine is a statement of power and finesse, with layers of cassis, juicy black fruits and crushed graphite slowly unveiling in the glass. The finish is precise, and seamless. We envision this wine ageing gracefully for two decades and beyond.

Winemaker, Paul Hobbs

Regarded as an international visionary for his accomplishments in the vineyard and winery, Paul Hobbs combines his childhood roots on the family farm with an innovative scientific approach to refine the art of winemaking. He is recognized across the globe for breaking with tradition and forging new paths in the pursuit of excellence; both in stewardship of the land, and the crafting of wines that represent the purist concept of place. Paul earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1975, and MS in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California, Davis in 1978. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the enology team at Robert Mondavi Winery, and one year later, at the behest of Robert Mondavi himself, Paul was invited to be on the inaugural team of Opus One. A first trip to Argentina in 1988 marked the beginning of a South American winemaking career that carries on today with his wines from Viña Cobos, and his legendary status as the pioneer who launched malbec’s rise to fame.
