Highlights

  • Flora Springs straddles the St. Helena and Rutherford appellations
  • Reflects the Rutherford Dust of our hillside vineyard and black fruit flavors from St. Helena
  • Our wine is aged for 22 months in tight-grained French oak barrels, primarily from the Allier forest
  • Flavors of fresh blackberries, currant and anise followed by sweet vanilla, cedar and cinnamon spice

Description

When you are fortunate enough to have two of the most prestigious appellations in Napa Valley on one single Estate – What do you do? You listen to what Aristotle so poignantly said: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. We knew like Aristotle - That if we took our most cherished wine on the Rutherford side – Our “Rutherford Hillside Reserve”, and our most cherished wine on the St. Helena side – Our “Rennie Reserve – We would be able to create in Aristotle’s vision – A wine that would be even greater than either one. The Rutherford component brings with it that classic “Rutherford Dust” – Earthy, mineral tones w/ hints of red fruits and sage. While the St Helena component brings the darker fruits of blackberry, currants, and anise that exhibits a velvety mid-palate, and finishes with hints of cedar and cinnamon spice. We think Aristotle would be proud!

Paul Steinauer

Winemaker, Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards

Winemaker, Paul Steinauer

Born in St. Helena, California Paul studied Marketing and Finance at the University of Oregon. He worked five harvests at Joseph Phelps Winery between school years before realizing that wine was his true calling. In 1990, he jumped at the opportunity to join the Flora Springs team as Assistant Winemaker, crafting wines that best express the well-cared-for fruit and distinct vineyards owned by the Komes and Garvey families. In 2008, Paul was promoted to Winemaker at Flora Springs.

Country born: USA

Education: Marketing and Finance at the University of Oregon

Years in the wine industry: 20-30 years

Winemaking Philosophy:
Paul's wine education has come through experience in the cellar at Flora Springs, enology courses at UC Davis,
and since 1993, through his tasting group that includes winemakers at several Napa Valley wineries. He counts
the magnificent estate fruit from Flora Springs 650 acres of vineyards throughout the Napa Valley as a real boon
to his task as a winemaker. At Flora Springs, we're able to have seamless communication between the farming
side and the production side, says Paul. He credits Vineyard Director Pat Garvey and President John Komes
with keeping the quality of Flora Springs' wines a top priority as evidenced in the sustainably-farmed vineyards
and recent addition of a new press and sorting table to gently handle all of Flora Springs estate fruit.
