Winemaker, Goosecross Cellars
I have been fortunate enough to make wine and spend time, in many wine producing regions throughout the world, South Africa, New Zealand, Europe and of course in the United Sates. Having had the experience of working in differing regions, with a wide number of varietals and winemaking styles, I can approach winemaking with a broader view and I think I'm more receptive to new ideas and techniques.
Country born: New Zealand
Education: Well, my first vintage was in 1994 in Southern England of all places. For me and although I've been through a number of curriculum's both in New Zealand and here at UC Davis in California, the most valuable education is spending time with other winemakers and actually "doing". I find being able to bring knowledge to bear on winemaking not just education, gives me a better insight into what we do. For example, prior to joining the Goosecross team, I was fortunate to spend eleven years at Duckhorn. As Executive Winemaker for Duckhorn, I was responsible for making multi varietals and brands.
Years in the wine industry: 20-30 years
Honors / Awards:
My greatest honor and reward for what I do is being able to spend time with our Goosecross customers and guests, talking to them about how we farm and make wine and seeing them enjoy the results of all our hard work!
Winemaking begins in the vineyard and I find I spend as much time working and collaborating with our various vineyard managers and growers as I do in the winery and cellar. I want to know, feel and appreciate the subtle difference expressed in the vineyard and allow that to show in the glass. For me, if there is a winemaking philosophy, it's less is more!
