Description

This 'field blend' vineyard, planted in Calistoga over 100 years ago, is an homage to California’s winegrowing heritage. When immigrants first settled here, they brought with them vine cuttings from their villages and planted what would later become known as "field blends." These unique vineyards produced wines that were shared among family, traded with neighbors and offer a nod to the farmers who settled in wine country. The aromatics are laden with heady blackberry, cassis and red licorice. The palate showcases ripe fruit flavors reminiscent of blood orange, pomegranate and blackberry cobbler. Typical of this vineyard, the fruit character is bold but balanced by bright acidity. The finish is lengthy across the palate with smooth tannins and refined oak integration.

Glenn Hugo

Winemaker, Girard Winery

Winemaker, Glenn Hugo

After working at various smaller production facilities I joined Girard as an intern. I've worked my way up from that part time opportunity to every position in the winery and ultimately became the winemaker in 2011.

Country born: United States

Education: My winemaking experience is concentrated in Napa Valley and includes early assignments with Provenance Vineyards, where I learned from Napa legend Tom Rinaldi, and hands-on experience at Sedna Winery and FleuryWinery. As the General Manager of The Bounty Hunter Wine Bar in downtown Napa, I soon met Marco DiGiulio and continued my dream at Girard.

Years in the wine industry: 20-30 years

Winemaking Philosophy:
My philosophy is simple: wine is to be shared with friends and family; it is a living and breathing expression that constantly evolves and instills memories. With this in mind, my focus is to find balance in wine with fruit, acid and tannin. I think of wine as part of the dining table and hope to always make wines that can be enjoyed with food.
