Showcases 100% estate grown fruit from our Suscol Springs Vineyard in southeastern Napa
Suscol’s cool climate and rocky soils yield balance and complexity
Offers powerful flavors of lush boysenberry and fig flavors with a note of minerality
Our 2018 Premiere Napa Valley selection pays tribute to the tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon that the cooler climate area of southeastern Napa Valley produces. Comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this blend of Suscol Springs estate grown fruit rests for 21 months in 62 percent new French oak barrels. The rocky soil of Suscol Springs, called Hambright Rocky Outcrop, is ideal for a vineyard this far south because the rocks throughout the estate accumulate heat during the day and help maintain warmth as the ambient temperature starts to cool off in the evening. This allows Cabernet Sauvignon grapes the chance to develop an exciting phenolic profile, as well as tremendous balance of acidity and powerful flavors of lush boysenberry and fig. The mild weather over the 2016 growing season resulted in long hang time, which allowed the fruit to slowly and uniformly ripen. This enhanced deep color, concentrated black fruit flavors, retained fresh acidity and resolved mature tannins. The result is an exquisite combination of balance and complexity.

Winemaker, Cakebread Cellars
I started school with every intention of becoming a beer brewer, but during my pre-requisite winemaking classes, I realized wine was my true passion and calling. An internship with Chalone and early jobs with Perry Creek vineyards and Bogle winery further confirmed that I had made the right choice. I joined Cakebread in 2004 as Enologist and became Assistant Winemaker in 2008, along with the role of Pinot Noir Project Leader in 2012. I had the benefit of learning from the talented Julianne Laks during her 30+ year tenure at Cakebread, along with Jack Cakebread and Bruce Cakebread who were the winery’s first and second winemakers.
