2016 Petite Sirah
Stags Leap District
As a winemaker and wine lover, I am often approached by benevolent souls who are delighted to have me try wonderful, ancient, dusty artifacts from their collections. As a wine connoiseur and amateur historian I am always happy to oblige. Since I have worked in many parts of the world, I have had the opportunity to taste wines from many regions and countries. More often than not, these experiences end in disappointment with wines that are over the hill, damaged by storage or sadly in our day, outright fakes. There is one wine that has rarely let me down and those are the magnificent and venerable old Petite Syrahs of Stags’ Leap Vineyard. Whether it is ’72, ’73 or the legendary ’74 or any of the fabulous older vintages, these wines continue to shine long after great Bordeaux and Burgundy has faded. The wines are youthful and nimble with vivacity and charm. They are rich and complex with weight and density. They are ideal with food and never too much. In this tradition we present our Premiere lot, a 2016 Quixote Petite Syrah. This wine is handpicked from the barrel off of the highest block on the Quixote property - the very block that Carl Doumani sourced his finest Quixote wine, The Helmet of Mambrino. This wine promises decades of drinking pleasure with layers of density and richness.
