Description
Our family has grown Cabernet Franc on our property since 1953. It has served as a component in the Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet and in early Opus One wines, as well as our family “house” wine—on our table for Thanksgiving and Christmas for as long as I can remember.
For Premiere, I chose to feature a special block planted to Cabernet Franc in 1949. We replanted in 1979 using budwood from the original vines—that budwood source is unknown, so we call it Detert clone. These vines produce fruit with complexity and density that can't be found in young vines, and this wine shows incredible concentration, purity and personality—and honors our family history, the property and the grape that has done so well here.

Tom Garrett
Winemaker, Detert Family Vineyards
In keeping with the family winegrowing tradition, the Detert wines are crafted by Tom Garrett, one of the three great-grandsons behind the Detert label. The Wine Spectator has heralded Tom as a rising star winemaker. He cut his teeth at the likes of Turley, Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, and under Heidi Peterson Barrett as her assistant winemaker for Revana. Tom has been at the helm of the Detert wines since 2000.
