Description
M by Michael Mondavi is a single-vineyard, estate wine produced by Michael and his family, and is the culmination of his life's work: a spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon from his own personal Animo Vineyard, high atop Atlas Peak. For Premiere Napa Valley, Michael, his children Rob and Dina, longtime (41 years) Mondavi family winemaker Tony Coltrin and general manager Geoff Whitman crafted a blend that features not one but two of our prized vineyards. Starting with Cabernet from Animo as the core we added Petit Verdot and Cabernet from the Oso Vineyard to create a complex yet beautifully balanced wine—a style for which the Mondavi family is renowned.

As a winemaker, I first consider myself as a wine drinker, asking what do I want to drink and what do my friends want to drink, and then I select the vineyards, fruit maturity and all winemaking decisions based on the desire to create mesmerizing wines for myself, friends and family.

Education: A non-classic winemaking background at Santa Clara University, miscellaneous chemistry and winemaking courses, but best of all a lifetime of experience in the cellar and vineyards.
Years in the wine industry: 15-20 years
Winemaking Philosophy:
My philosophy encompasses the amazing roots my family has planted, yet roots are not enough. Finding new ways to create cutting-edge wines is key and it is important to go beyond the style of wines that my forefathers created. If not, I would be disappointed in myself for not stretching the limits, as I would not have embraced the heritage to excel that was provided by my family.
