Description
Of all the 19th century vintners who grew
grapes on what is now the Spring Mountain
Vineyard, the most recognizable are the
Beringer brothers, Tiburcio Parrott and
Fortune Chevalier. However, the most forwardthinking
was Charles Lemme, who planted
Spring Mountain’s first Cabernet Sauvignon
vines on his La Perla vineyard in 1870.
Still the source of outstanding Cabernet,
La Perla vineyard block 42, 1.4 acres at 1,600
feet in elevation, is the source of this lot.
As is typical of SMV Cabernet, the wine
delivers an abundance of bright red fruit
with perfumed aromas, jammy and spicy
notes with a velvety mid-palate, solid
structure and elegant finish. The 2009
vintage embodies the concept “less is more”—
the vineyard yielded less than one ton of
fruit per acre. The vines were trained to the
Vertical Gobelet method.
