Description

We've been working with fruit from the Truchard Vineyard in northeastern Carneros for over a decade. While the region is more widely planted to Burgundian varietals, this vineyard's location allows it to shine with Bordeaux varieties, as well; alluvial fans, volcanic soils, and western exposure create an exceptional terroir. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from this vineyard are important components of our varietal bottlings, so little can be spared. However, we've found magic with this Claret-style blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon/45% Merlot, and a barrel is created each year for the winemaker's private stock. In 2013, we're sparing 5 cases of this blend; we'll have to ration our balance.
This single-vineyard blend is a study in red fruit, and is crafted for depth, complexity and balance. Aged in French oak for 21 months, it is a testament to the exceptional quality produced in Napa Valley in vintage 2013.

Philip Zorn

Winemaker, Waterstone

Winemaker, Philip Zorn

While born in the US, I was raised in Berlin. I started my winemaking career in 1979 at a little winery in the Nahe region of Germany with an apprenticeship, followed by 3 years of schooling mixed with winery experience from small to large. Upon getting my diploma, my young family moved to Napa. I made wine at Sunny St. Helena Winery, Gauer Estate in Sonoma, Mountain View Vintners, and Paraiso Springs in Monterey, gaining experience with grapes grown in several regions. In 1998 I ventured out on my own, and by 2000 had established the Waterstone brand with business partner Brent Shortridge.

Country born: United States

Education: Staatlich geprufter Techniker fur Weinban und Kellerwirtschaft
Walter Schug was my first mentor upon arriving in the US

Years in the wine industry: 20-30 years

Winemaking Philosophy:
It is my goal to let the vineyard speak in my wines. I try not to interfere with the expression of terroir, and am careful to ensure that the oak does not overshadow fruit expression.
