Description
Cradled in a spectacular bowl all to itself, clinging to the side of the Mayacamas range at the top of Spring Mountain, the Cain Vineyard is truly iconic. In 1985, with its first vintage, the Cain Five was one of Napa's early Cabernet blends of the modern era. Today, it is recognized as one of the most distinctive wines of Napa Valley.
Following the disasters of recent wildfires nothing could be more satisfying than rediscovering the signature aromas, flavors and textures of our Cain Vineyard in the 2021 Cain Five offering. Though many vines were lost to the 2020 Glass Fire, enough stalwart survivors persisted to remind us why we tend the vineyard on this difficult mountain!
Cain continues, thanks to the efforts of a profoundly dedicated team, the generous support of Napa's winegrowing community, and the inspiration of an amazing vineyard.

Winemaker, Cain Vineyard & Winery
Chris Howell calls himself, Wine-Grower. He has dedicated more than twenty-five years to Cain Vineyard & Winery. His commitment to Cain stems from a realization that one can only learn from one vintage to the next, and that depth of knowledge of a single vineyard takes years to acquire. His focus is on fine wine-growing, following the process from vineyard into the cellar and finally to the glass. There are just two essential prerequisites for doing this, knowing wine and loving wine. In both of these, he remains a perpetual student.

Education: My perspective has been informed by very many generous friends, colleagues and teachers, both in Napa and from throughout the world, who have shared their experiences generously. I thank them all.
Years in the wine industry: 30+ years
Winemaking Philosophy:
A confirmed traditionalist, with a New World perspective, Chris believes that winemaking is merely the corollary of grapegrowing. Originality is discovered in the vineyard.
