Description
Spread across the steep hillsides of Spring Mountain, the Newton Vineyard estate is comprised of 112 vineyard blocks intertwined with the existing forested landscape. The individual character of each parcel results from the varying microclimates of the mountaintop’s contours and rugged terrain, providing our winemaker diverse components with which to create an interesting, complex wine. These lots are kept separate until winemaker Chris Millard artfully assembles these parcels, like pieces of a puzzle, into a multi-faceted blend.
An early pioneer of Spring Mountain, Newton Vineyard was one of the first Napa Valley wineries to craft unfiltered and naturally fermented wines, and The Puzzle offers the finest expression of our Spring Mountain estate. This Premiere Napa Valley lot features a special blend made from The Puzzle lots available from the 2010 harvest.

My first winemaking job was at Bernardus Winery in Carmel Valley, starting in the cellar and became the assistant winemaker. I then worked at Bridlewood and Sterling Vineyard before coming to Newton Vineyard in May 2008.

Winemaking Philosophy:
I enjoy working with the intense fruit that Newton's Spring Mountain vineyard provides, aiming to interfere as little as possible. This means using the native yeasts and bottling wine unfiltered, which is a more meticulous, laborious approach, but worth it.
