Description
Vertical Gobelet is an ancient form of vine training commonly used in France's Côte Rôtie. It is uncommon in the US, with the exception of 90 hillside acres at Spring Mountain Vineyard. Vertical Gobelet vines have an eye-catching shape. As you might guess, with canes tied up to individual stakes, they resemble wine goblets! In 1995, on the advice of French viticulturist Pierre Galet, SMV pioneered the unusual method, finding it well suited to its shallow, rocky soils where vines yield just over one ton of fruit per acre. For this reason, Gobelet vines are planted densely—meter by meter—each ripening just a few clusters of fruit.
In a perfect case of "less is more," this PNV lot of Cabernet Sauvignon has intense varietal character, deep color and concentrated flavor.
