Description

Spottswoode’s founding winemaker and vineyard manager, Tony Soter, and Aron Weinkauf, who now fills both these roles (he started with us in 2006), have remarkable similarities. They are both intuitive in their approaches, viewing things philosophically, holistically and thoughtfully, with a great sense of and sensitivity toward our environment and how wine growing fits into this natural system. For each of them, it is farming first. Tony brought organics to Spottswoode, Aron biodynamics and regenerative organics. Tony crafted our first ten vintages (1982 – 1991), Aron our last eleven (2010 – 2020, with two more vintages in barrel). Tony has visited in the past and walked the vineyard with Aron, sharing his sense of this place from the 1980s and 1990s. Aron has shared his sense of site from the recent decades with Tony. And more. For this Premiere Napa Valley lot, Tony and Aron have come together to create a unique Cabernet Sauvignon from 2021—our 40th anniversary vintage—which illustrates and celebrates their shared sense of grape growing and winemaking at their most authentic. This wine represents this time (the 2021 vintage) and this place (the Spottswoode Estate Vineyard), as collaborated on by these two aligned, creative winegrowing minds.

Aron Weinkauf

Winemaker, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery

Winemaker, Aron Weinkauf

Aron joined Spottswoode as assistant winemaker in 2006, and in 2009, he was also named Spottswoode's vineyard manager. Two years later, in recognition of his deep understanding of the vineyard, his gifted palate, and his artistry as a winemaker, Aron became the fifth winemaker in the winery's storied history. As both vineyard manager and winemaker, Aron carries on a rich tradition at Spottswoode of embracing an interconnected view of winemaking with deep roots in the vineyard. He is in the vineyard almost daily, guiding the farming of the estate's 24 blocks. In the winery, he works in small lots to ensure the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon authentically reflects the vineyard and the vintage, and that it is true to the elegant, energetic and age-worthy style for which Spottswoode has been recognized since 1982. Prior to Spottswoode, Aron worked at Paul Hobbs and was the assistant winemaker at Ficklin Vineyards.

Country born: United States

Education: Earned a BA in Spanish from Berry College. Studied abroad in Sevilla and Barcelona, Spain. Earned a degree in viticulture and enology from Fresno State. Assistant winemaker at Ficklin Vineyards. Winemaking team at Paul Hobbs.

I have a deep appreciation for my experiences throughout the years, and all I've learned working with Peter Ficklin, Paul Hobbs, Jennifer Williams and Rosemary Cakebread.

Years in the wine industry: 10-15 years

Winemaking Philosophy:
Aron's winemaking philosophy is gentle, thoughtful and vineyard driven, while still being intimately hands-on and detail-oriented. "Working with our vineyard, I've come to believe in the interconnectedness of all things. With a vineyard like Spottswoode, if you are deeply aware of the needs of the land, you can make a dynamic wine of remarkable pleasure, beauty and balance in even the most challenging vintages."

Tony Soter

Winemaker, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery

Winemaker, Tony Soter

Winemaker, farmer, mentor—Soter is all those things. One of the most respected winemakers in the business, he helped lay the groundwork for modern Napa Valley Cabernet in the 1980s.

Country born: USA

Years in the wine industry: 30+ years

Winemaking Philosophy:
A focus on biodynamic grape growing as the key to creating rich flavor and substance in our wines. Cellar techniques look to the wisdom of past generations, and the approach is to trust these natural processes to best evoke the voice and character of each vineyard. It is this unique integration of growing and making that lend to creating some of the very best examples of fine wine.
