Thomas Rivers Brown’s approach to winemaking is both modern and admirably classic. His philosophy is natural and non-interventionist, resulting in wines that are beautifully crafted, rich and expansive. Common themes run through all of his wines—complexity, graceful balance and generosity of flavors. From Calistoga to Los Carneros, from Coombsville to the Diamond Mountain District, from mountain hillsides to the valley floor, his wines speak of the singularity of the vineyards, their soils and the growing conditions of the year in which they were produced. When asked what his biggest influences are when crafting a Cabernet Sauvignon, Thomas says, “Well, I tend to model a Cab on all the different wines I’ve tasted. In the back of my brain I’ve got memories of past vintages I love that shape my style. Wines from the late ’60s and early ’70s have been a constant model.” In Thomas’ wine world, it’s all about creating the best. He says, “Wine is a documentary of so many interconnected parts—the land and its soils, the period of time in which it was grown and made, and the actions of the people dedicated to its production. It is the combination of these that make wine so interesting.”
