A shining beacon of this storied winery’s portfolio is its Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon, and your lot includes two cases of the lustrous 2008 vintage. Your wine was crafted from two exceptional vineyards in Napa Valley’s gently sloping western benchlands, including Hill Ranch in the heart of the famed Rutherford nested appellation not far from the winery. Both sites enjoy ideal eastern exposures, well-drained soils and mild afternoon temperatures, resulting in uniform fruit ripening and wines of impressive depth and elegance. In 2008, 60% of the Benchland Select grapes came from the Hill Ranch, with 40% from the esteemed Oakville nested appellation. The 2008 growing season started with heavy rains in the winter, along with drought conditions and frost in the spring. Coupled with heat during grape set, this reduced the size of the crop, greatly concentrating flavors. The clear and mild summer that year provided ideal conditions for the full maturation of the grapes, with the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Your resulting wine is full of dark fruit, dark chocolate and supple oak, ending with a long, elegant finish.
Winemaker, Cakebread Cellars
I started school with every intention of becoming a beer brewer, but during my pre-requisite winemaking classes, I realized wine was my true passion and calling. An internship with Chalone and early jobs with Perry Creek vineyards and Bogle winery further confirmed that I had made the right choice. I joined Cakebread in 2004 as Enologist and became Assistant Winemaker in 2008, along with the role of Pinot Noir Project Leader in 2012. I had the benefit of learning from the talented Julianne Laks during her 30+ year tenure at Cakebread, along with Jack Cakebread and Bruce Cakebread who were the winery’s first and second winemakers.
