Description
One of California’s legendary vineyards, Three Palms Vineyard’s unique terroir has been a consistent benchmark for New World Merlot. Duckhorn Vineyards has been producing a vineyard-designated Merlot from this vineyard since our inaugural vintage in 1978. Named for its three iconic palm trees, the warm, upvalley vineyard features lean soils that cause the vines to send their roots deep in search of nutrients, producing an intense, ageworthy wine with complex fruit and mineral layers. Three Palms is covered by volcanic stones, which absorb the sun’s heat during the day and radiate the heat back to the vines at night, protecting against frost and helping to ripen the fruit. This special, one-of-a-kind Premiere Napa Valley lot is comprised of 100% Merlot aging in 100% new French oak for 18 months. Sourced from one of our winemaker’s favorite vineyard blocks, the depth, complexity and ageworthy structure of this unique selection from Three Palms Vineyard is sure to impress.

Renee Ary
Winemaker, Duckhorn Vineyards
Renee Ary became the fourth winemaker in the four-decade history of Duckhorn Vineyards in 2014. Her promotion came after 11 years as an integral member of the winemaking team—including roles as assistant and associate winemaker. Like the two acclaimed winemakers before her, Renee spent years working alongside her predecessors, honing her craft, refining her gifted palate and mastering the Duckhorn Vineyards style. “It’s important to approach a role like this with humility,” adds Renee, “and with the knowledge that I am a part of an ongoing story—that I am contributing to the legacy of a great winery, and building on the work of the talented people who laid the foundation for excellence.”

Education: Degree in chemistry and art from Saint Mary’s College.
Renee spent four years working closely with winemaking luminaries Genevieve Janssens, Steve Leveque and Richard Sowalsky.
