Description

Old Napa Valley soul is imbued in our special bottling of the Steltzner Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a classic Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon from the Steltzner family’s historic vineyard. We began working with the Steltzner Vineyard in 2021 and are thrilled with the results of that first vintage. Dick Steltzner began farming this 30-acre site in the Stags Leap District nested appellation in the mid-1960s. In the late 1970s he went on to establish his own winery. Steltzner is synonymous with Stags Leap—Dick was responsible for planting and maintaining a number of the vineyards in the nested appellation in the 1970s and 1980s. While Dick is still involved, his daughter, Allison Steltzner, has taken over much of the day-to-day management of the vineyard. It was our friendship with Allison and her husband Sam that led to our good fortune of getting Cabernet Sauvignon from them. Located on the eastern slopes of the Stags Leap District, Steltzner Vineyard is an early ripening site despite being in a slightly cooler, southern nested appellation for Napa Valley. Well-drained and benefiting from the warm afternoon sunshine, the vineyard sets fruit early and is early to harvest. Stylistically, Stags Leap District produces perfumed, red-fruited Cabernet Sauvignons that are prized for their nuance and precision.

Tom's family roots in Napa Valley stretch back to the early 1950s when his great-grandmother purchased a historic Oakville vineyard property within the famed To-Kalon Vineyard. 50 years later, Tom began Detert Family Vineyard wines, named after his great-grandmother and made from his family's Oakville vineyard. Over the past 15 years Tom honed his craft working alongside other great winemakers and mentors at Turley Wine Cellars, Joseph Phelps Winery, Robert Mondavi Winery and Revana Family Vineyard. Tom continues to make his family's highly regarded Detert wines.
