Before the glamour we know today, Napa Valley was a simple community. Growers, farmers and winemakers recognized the world-class quality and untapped potential that lay dormant beneath their feet and within the hillsides. Founded in 1972, Rutherford Hill was one of those original few who, in our pioneering of Merlot, helped define the standard that Napa Valley has become renowned for across the world. For your Premiere Napa Valley lot this year, we have been on a pursuit to create the utmost Napa Valley Merlot-dominant classic red blend, proudly sourced from the Atlas Peak, Oakville, Rutherford and Stags Leap District nested appellations. With our Grotto Blend, we were inspired to create a wine with the same sense of grandeur and depth as our stunning infamous cave-aging grotto. This exalted Pomerol-inspired blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is just that. It’s a wine that takes you on a journey, offering amazing depth and exquisite structure—an experience as unforgettable as our caves themselves.

Winemaker, Rutherford Hill Winery
Growing up among the vineyards of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, I guess perhaps I was destined to find a career in winemaking. At a young age, I recall visits to the vineyards to watch my godfather, a vineyard manager, work with the vines. And like most people who grow up in wine country, wine was a typical fixture at my family's dinner table. I developed a deep appreciation for the process of taking the tender grapes from vine to the glass, generating the spark of what would become my professional calling

Education: Marisa graduated from the University of California, Davis, first with a B.S. in Chemistry and then an M.S. in Food Science-Enology.

Winemaking Philosophy:
What is in the glass should reflect what is in the vineyards. My desire is to to help the grapes express themselves in the best possible way.
