Description

This special lot of was crafted exclusively for Premiere Napa Valley by our renowned winemaker Philippe Melka, from the rare FSP-06 Clone planted to our Lovall Valley estate vineyard. One of Napa Valley’s most remote sites, and certainly its coolest, Lovall Valley enjoys a unique fog-cooled microclimate and elevated hillside exposures that, in concert with our own meticulous, vine-by-vine organic viticulture, produce fruit of extraordinary varietal purity and structural precision. In the cellar, Philippe employed gentle whole cluster pressing followed by a unique mixed-vessel approach in which the lot was both fermented and aged in a combination of French oak barrel, concrete egg and steel tank. The resulting wine is both vibrantly expressive and sublimely sophisticated, displaying the focused stone fruit, exotic notes and textural complexity that are hallmarks of our Lovall Valley estate. We recommend that you hold this wine for at least one year before serving, and optimally cellar for up to 5 years to appreciate its full aging potential.

Philippe Melka

Winemaker, Grieve Family Winery

Winemaker, Philippe Melka

Bordeaux native Philippe Melka is a self-described soil nerd, who has always been intrigued by the intricacies of the land. He originally pursued a degree in Geology at the University of Bordeaux, however a winemaking class during his ?nal year proved pivotal. It set him on a new course that would see him become one of the world’s most coveted winemakers, honing his artistry at prestigious estates including Château Haut Brion, Petrus, Dominus, Silver Oak and his own Melka Wines.

Winery owners David and Kathleen Grieve had long admired Philippe’s wines and his site-driven approach to winemaking. When it came time to hire a winemaker, they reached out to Philippe through mutual friend Tuck Beckstoffer. For his part, Philippe was excited by the vineyard’s terroir and the opportunity to work with Lovall Valley fruit. In 2018, he took over as head winemaker for Grieve Family Winery, where he marries old world traditions with new world advancements to produce the winery’s limited production portfolio of profoundly expressive Grieve Family Estate and Double Eagle wines.
