2017 Cabernet Sauvignon
Atlas Peak
At 1,600 feet above sea level and well above the fogline, Rombauer Vineyards’ Atlas Peak Vineyard was the source of the family’s first single vineyard designated wine in 2003. From the 2017 vintage, this unique wine beautifully showcases the character of Cabernet Sauvignon from this remote and rugged site. In contrast to the valley floor, cooler temperatures prevail in this sunny, high elevation vineyard, creating a long, even growing season. The volcanic soils and rocky topography stress the vines, yielding small clusters and berries with concentration and flavor intensity. A portion of this wine was barrel-fermented to provide a more textured palate and silky tannins and then gently basket-pressed before being racked to French oak barrels for aging. This mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is dark purple with ruby highlights and enticing aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cassis, brown sugar, molasses and baking spices. The palate is rich and textured with flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cassis, cocoa powder and a hint of wet gravel. The finish is long and smooth, with supple tannins and bright acidity.
